EXPERIENCED INSTRUCTORS
AND COACHING STAFF
DAVE BOCANELLI – Dave combines over
three decades of coaching and instructing.
He has earned awards throughout the Greater Cleveland area including the
1998 AAU Coach of the Year. An outstanding
coach in both men’s & youth organizations, his dedication has sent young
men onto college scholarships as well as professional contract signings. In 1995, his “14 & Under” Puritas /
Fielder’s Choice team won the Division I Dizzy Dean and NBC State
Championships. They placed 3rd
in the World Series representing Ohio as well as being honored with the
Sportsmanship Award. In his 30th
year of coaching baseball, his “14 & Under” Fielder’s Choice team finished
2nd in the CABA World Series and had an overall record of 79-13-1.
BRETT HIGGINS – Brett was the major stat leader through three of his four years of high school baseball. The 4 year letterman won 2 Conference Championships and advanced to the State Semi-Finals his senior year at Euclid High School. During his tenure at Lakeland Community College, Brett earned two team batting titles, two Conference Championships and an All-Conference honor. Brett’s play at Lakeland landed him a full scholarship at Savannah State University where he earned All-American awards twice. He led the NCAA II in batting average, doubles, RBI’s, Runs Scores and slugging percentage. Two terrific years at Savannah State made Brett the first athlete in school history to sign a professional baseball contract, where he learned to really play the game through the Seattle Mariners organization.
PAUL MOVIEL – Paul, in his 4th year as an Instructor at FC, had also played for three years in the Fielder's Choice program. As a member of our Hall of Fame, he is the All-Time home run leader of our Connie Mack team with 23. After graduating from Berea High School , Paul attended Kishwaukee Junior College in Malta , Illinois where in his 2nd year, he posted a 9-1 pitching record which got him drafted in the 36th round of the June 2003 Amateur Draft by the Chicago White Sox. He has spent the past three years in the White Sox organization. In 2005, Paul received the Pitcher of the Year Award after coming back from Tommy John surgery. In 2006, Paul was 2nd in the South Atlantic League for most appearances out of the bullpen with 55. He had a 3.13 ERA with an 84 to 29 strike out / walk ratio.
CY LEVKANICH – Coach Lev is a veteran of 27 years Cross-Country
coaching as well as 23 years of Track & Field. During that time, his Cross-Country teams have qualified for the
State Championship meet twice and the Track & Field teams earned a school
record of 7 consecutive District Title’s and 3 State Championships for
Benedictine High School. He also
coached Baseball for 5 years at Cuyahoga Community College, where he worked
with Fielder’s Choice instructor and Connie Mack coach Dan Smego. At Tri-C, his areas of responsibility
included Base Running, Flexibility, Speed Training as well as general athletic
conditioning and its implementation into baseball, both on offense &
defense. The Tri-C team set school records
for stolen bases in a season, team and individual, as well as team
base-stealing percentage. Coach Lev is
currently in his third season as a track coach at Case Western Reserve
University and will instruct all 3 Fielder’s Choice travel teams.
CHRIS NOSS - Coach Noss comes to
Fielder's Choice as no stranger to the local area baseball scene. After a
stellar amateur and high school career, Chris graduated from St. Edward High
School in 1993. He then went on to start as a freshman on the Hiram baseball team,
where he tied a school record for most hits in a season during the 1994
campaign. Chris was the Assistant Junior Varsity Baseball Coach at St.Ed's from
1995-1996, Head JV Coach 1997-1998 & 2005, Assistant Varsity Coach at
St.Ed's 2006. Along with being an Instructor at FCB, Chris will also work with
all three of our FCB travel teams.
DAN SMEGO – Dan came to Fielder’s
Choice with over 20 years experience beginning as a 4-time high school All Star
player from 1974-1978. He then went on
to play for Cleveland State University as a center fielder and first baseman as
well as their leading hitter in 1979.
Dan’s coaching career began in 1982 as head coach for Connie Mack &
Mickey Mantle leagues and through 9 years, his teams produced several league
championships. In addition, his
knowledge of hitting took him to a coaching position at Cuyahoga Community
College where they won three conference championships in a four-year
period. Dan continues to help instruct
and coach our 3 Travel Teams in hitting and is instrumental in running several
of the Fielder’s Choice camps throughout the year. Dan will also take over the Head Coaching position for the FCB
Connie Mack travel team in 2006.
JOE CHARBONEAU - “Super Joe” Charboneau debut with the Cleveland
Indians in 1980, splitting time between left field and being a designated
hitter. Joe had a team leading 23 home
runs, 87 runs batted in and a .289 batting average earning him the 1980
American League Rookie of the Year award.
He has had a book written about him along with a song “Go Joe
Charboneau” which was a big hit on the local charts. A back injury in a spring training game in 1981, which he never
fully recovered, led to him being released from the Indians in 1983. Although Joe has been through a number of
other injuries, he was still able to get a hit in professional baseball in 4
decades (70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 00’s). Along
with doing clinics and lessons, Joe has also been a minor-league hitting coach
for the past eight years. Come see one
of the Cleveland Indians top 100 favorite players of all time.
GREG MOVIEL - Greg went to St. Ignatius High School where he was on the first ever baseball and basketball state championship teams. Greg lettered all 4 years in baseball and 3 years in basketball. As a standout left-handed pitcher, he was an incredible 34-1 in his 4 years of high school baseball tying a state record for most career wins. Among his numerous awards were Plain Dealer Player of the Year in his junior and senior years as well as the Cleveland Indians Mike Garcia Award as their Player of the Year. Greg was drafted out of high school by the Chicago White Sox, but decided to continue his schooling at Vanderbilt University. He was on the SEC honor roll his sophomore and junior years, where he went to the regionals twice and onto the super-regional once. He decided to start his professional career after his junior year as he was drafted and signed by the Seattle Mariners. Time will tell what will happen next, but with Greg as well as with brother Paul, the sky is the limit.
DAVE NEALE - When you think of Cleveland Slow Pitch Softball,
the Neale name is synonymous with the best teams and players, not just locally,
but worldwide. Fielder’s Choice Baseball is very pleased to have David Jr. as
an instructor. During Dave’s legendary
career, he had played, recruited, evaluated and chose players for 11- time
National Champions Steele’s Sports, along with local and national powers: Non
Ferrous Metals, Ohio Transport, Laborers Local 310 and Twohig A.C.. David was a 2006 elected member of the
Cleveland Slow Pitch Hall of Fame as well as a Local, National and
International clinician. For anyone who
would like to learn from one of the best, from beginner to advanced players,
please call to schedule with Dave to take your game to another level.
